CORGI vs. Gas Safe Register: What You Need to Know

If you’re seeing references to CORGI and Gas Safe Register, don’t worry—it’s the same official authority, just under a new name.

  • CORGI (Council for Registered Gas Installers) was the official regulatory body for gas engineers from 1991 until April 2009. This register ensured that engineers were qualified and followed safety standards.
  • On 1 April 2009, the UK Health & Safety Executive replaced CORGI with the Gas Safe Register, now managed by Capita. Since then, Gas Safe is the only legally recognised register for gas engineers.

Gas Safe Registered or CORGI Are They the Same

  • They are the same, but under different names.
  • If your paperwork or old certificates indicate CORGI, they were valid at the time; however, today, only Gas Safe registration is accepted.
  • If an engineer still mentions “CORGI registered,” ask to see their current Gas Safe ID card to ensure they’re legally qualified to work on gas appliances.

Why This Matters

  • Only Gas Safe-registered engineers are legally permitted to install, repair, or service gas boilers, central heating systems, and related appliances.
  • Landlords, homeowners, and tenants should always ask to see a Gas Safe plate or ID card before allowing any work to proceed.

How We Make It Easy for You

We work with fully Gas Safe registered engineers, and all our engineers carry up-to-date Gas Safe ID cards. You can be confident that any installation, repair, or service we carry out meets the highest safety standards and complies with UK regulations.

Gas Safe Registered Engineers in London

Only a Gas Safe registered engineer is legally allowed to install, maintain, repair and service gas appliances. A Gas Safe registered engineer is qualified to work on:

  • Domestic boilers
  • Gas hobs
  • Gas ovens
  • Gas cookers
  • Gas fires
  • Any other gas appliances in your home

It is a legal requirement for anyone carrying out gas work to be registered with Gas Safe Register.

The Gas Safe Register works hard to keep the general public safe. They employ a team of investigators to track down engineers who are working illegally and they also perform regular inspection of Gas Safe engineers.

As well as investigating a report of unsafe work they also tackle the task of educating consumers of gas safety. Their combined efforts are to ensure that they keep you, the general public, safe from unsafe gas installations.

CORGI Registered Plumbers

On 1 April 2009, it replaced the old CORGI registration as the gas registration body in Great Britain and has since been improving and maintaining gas safety in the UK. If you are searching for CORGI Registered plumbers in London, then call our team today.
